Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) is a nonprofit R&D organization engaging in applied research and technical services. ITRI is a member of the Global Smart Grid Federation.

Areas of Focus

ITRI is a multidisciplinary research center, with six core laboratories and seven technology centers, several leading labs and various business development units. The six core fields include Green Energy and Environment, Information and Communications, Electronics and Optoelectronics, Material, Chemical and Nanotechnology, Medical Device and Biomedical, Mechanical and Systems. The Green Energy and Environment Research Laboratories (GEL) are leading the smart grid technology development focusing on:

• Developing power grid management,
• Renewable/ clean energy, power conversion,
• High-efficiency appliances and energy management for various kinds of end users. In addition, we provide a platform to engage the efforts of related industries and support our government to promote the policies.


Industrial Technology Research Institute was founded in 1973, and has played a vital role in transforming Taiwan’s economy from a labor-intensive industry to a high-tech industry. ITRI has about 5,700 employees, with 22% Ph.D.s and 55% masters, and produces five patents every day in average. The annual revenue is about USD $600 million. ITRI built the first low-voltage AMI pilot system in Taiwan and supports Bureau of Energy to coordinate “Smart Grid Master Plan”, which was announced on 3rd September, 2012.
